Steel Complete Weekend Series Sweep of Kenai River Brown Bears
After a 6-2 win on Friday night at Soldotna Regional Sports Complex the Steel were hunting for their second series sweep of Kenai River in as many months.
The Steel were able to get on the board first again Saturday night with a power play goal by Jacob Dirks just over 5 minutes into the the first period assisted by Camden Thiesing and Connor Smzul. Despite Kenai having 16 shots to Chippewa’s 9, the Steel took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Grisha Gotovets recorded his second goal of the season when he found the back of the net 8 minutes and 50 seconds into the second period. Eau Claire Native Hutson Collins scored a power play goal of his own assisted by Brendan Ogle and Michael Black sending the game into a 3-0 Chippewa advantage to the final period.
Camden Thiesing struck for another power play goal in the third period to cap off the scoring at 4-0. Thiesing brought his team high goal total to nine on the season.
In goal for the Steel on Saturday was Igor Samokhvalov saving all 37 shots. In the last three games the Russian Goalie has saved 93 of 96 shots directed his way.
After Saturday’s 4-0 win the Steel now have their largest win streak of a total of three games in their Inaugural Season.
“We have stressed work ethic, playing for each other and doing things the right right way on and off the ice. The guys have bought into that and it’s good to see them rewarded for their efforts,” stated Interim Head Coach Carter Foguth.
The Steel now will head to Fairbanks, Alaska for a 3-game series starting Thursday night at 10:00 CST from Big Digger Ice Arena. Fans can catch the action on HockeyTV.
The Steel will return to the Chippewa Area Ice Arena on Saturday, January 26th for a 7:10 puck drop. It’s 92.9 the X Night.
